The Door

The Door is video-walk in which the spectator can roam around the Theatre School of Janskerkhof (Utrecht); a building full of history (orphanage and war prison). The work seeks to explore new ways of denoting and presenting a fictionalisation of the space without physically changing it. 

 

During the experience the spectator carries a tablet in which a video is presented. This video works as a guide through the space, while presenting a different view of the space. The spectator was able to physically walk through the space during daytime, surrounded by the people and hustle of the school, while at the same time being immersed in a different reality. This “other” reality presented the same space, but at night, empty and closed. 

 

The piece was accompanied by a soundtrack that created an increasing sensation of thrill. With all these elements put together the work was able to create an intense experience that played with the expectations of the spectator, and their perception of space.
